In August, the Mariners hold their annual Junior Helm Week, this
is 'the' event in the junior calendar, when some l00 youngsters,
aged between seven and seventeen attend, to either learn to sail
or to help others to sail. Well that's the theory, in truth it is
a 5 day water based party culminating with the biggest water
fight imaginable!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT? Junior Helm Week has been a central event in the club calendar for some time. It was started in 1982 by the late Bob Ferguson, CMYC Commodore 1982-87. The first event took place from the Mill Lane end of the lake before our present clubhouse was built. Initially members used their own boats to introduce young people to sailing but since 1987 the club has hired boats. Now of course we can supplement these with our own club junior fleet of Toppers and Oppies. The emphasis during the week is on fun rather than formal instruction. Bob's Junior Helm Week continues to flourish and the Bob Ferguson trophy is awarded to the Optimist sailor who improves the most during the week. |
Be sure to book early for this event it is very,
very popular! Download an application form here
DRAWING & PAINTING COMPETITION
We plan to hold a drawing and painting exhibition during the week, as this has proved a big success over the past few years. If the younger members could do a drawing or painting of children having fun at Junior Helm Week, A4 size please. We will display them in the clubhouse during the week. You may use any artistic medium, paint, felt pen, crayon, whatever you like but PLEASE PUT YOUR NAME AND AGE ON THE FRONT. There will be PRIZES for the best, most colourful and most imaginative entries in two age categories. Please bring them along on the first day of Junior Helm Week.
