Start Sailing with Crawley Mariners Yacht Club

The sport of sailing provides great enjoyment but starting out can appear a bit daunting. However, millions of people sail so it can't be that difficult and at CMYC formal training, together with informal guidance and advice, is available in a friendly atmosphere.

Learning to sail

The RYA's National Sailing Scheme is a level based system which ranges from Start Sailing to Performance Sailing. The idea is to progress from sailing in light winds on sheltered water to sailing in moderate winds and, if you wish, on to high performance sailing.

Each year our instructors run a Level 1 course and a combined Level 1 & 2 course. The Start Sailing Level 1 course takes place over two full days, at the end of which you should be able to sail in light winds under supervision.  The Basic Skills Level 1 & 2 course takes place over five days, at the end of which you should be able to rig and launch a boat, sail a triangular course, pick up a mooring and return safely to shore.  For Juniors we run two Young Sailors courses during the year.

Give it a try

Come along to one of our Open Days to get on the water with one of our members or contact the Membership Secretary to arrange another opportunity to do so.  Alternatively, have a look at our programme, come along when an event is taking place and someone will show you around.

Starting out without a boat

You don't need to own a boat to join the club.  You may find it beneficial to crew for other members to gain experience before or after joining an RYA course.  This will also help you to decide what type of boat is likely to be most suitable to your needs.

When you are ready to look for a boat of your own you will find members' boats advertised for sale in the clubhouse and on the website.  It is possible to pick up a small dinghy in good condition for a few hundred pounds.
