Cobnor Weekends (suitable for those aged 13 to 19)
Twice a year (Spring and Autumn) we take a group of students to Cobnor Activity Centre in Chichester Harbour. These weekends are very popular with the young people sailing & instructors alike and the powerboat drivers who come along to help. As most of the them have learnt to sail on our small lake, this is an important part of our programme, as it allows young sailors to understand and experience sailing on much larger tidal waters. During the past few years we have opened these weekends to parents as well, to enable them to experience the sailing in a beautiful natural tidal harbour. This has proved very successful, so we intend to continue to offer this.
The centre is located in a quiet, sheltered area of the harbour, surrounded by fields on the land side and with easy launching on site. We sail dinghies typically large enough for two students and an instructor, some of these have spinnakers fitted. We also take along some of our club boats (RS Quests/2000/Magnos) allowing the young sailors to experience the thrill of planing spinnaker dinghies with a trapeze; great fun!
We take the clubs two sea ribs, enabling us to run a tidal Safety Boat Course and our Level 2 qualified power boat drivers can improve their skills in a tidal situation. During the weekend we visit various parts of the harbour depending on tide and weather constraints and are on the water for most of the day.
Accommodation consists of a dining hall, drying room and sleeping accommodation in a log cabin.
To run the wwekend we need parents to plan the catering and cook. Our instructors and power boat crews give their time voluntarily, so it is important that we feed them well. Those helping with cooking can also sail. Everyone is expected to help with washing up and cleaning duties during the stay.
