Learning to sail with Crawley Mariners Yacht Club
Once a month, from late March to November, informal training sessions called 'Saturday Clubs' (no prizes for guessing when we run these) are the heartbeat of the informal club training. Saturday Clubs are split into two groups: Adults and Juniors. Our instructors will be out in force, going sailing with the adult participants and addressing any sailing related question/need; within reason obviously :) In parallel, our juniors and youths from 6 to 19 years of age will be having fun in boats and learning skills in a safe and controlled environment. A great opportunity for the whole family to have a day out on the water, including the grandparents who can watch from the shore!
A RYA qualification is known and respected the world over and at CMYC we are proud to be delivering your training to these high standards. The RYA approved sailing courses for Adults and Juniors are run throughout the year and details for the adults can be found below and are also published in the newsletter which is mailed regularly to all members. Additionally, we usually run two RYA Power Boat Level 2 courses prior to the start of the sailing season, a two day course for members only, equipping our members with the skills to perform their power boat club duties and supporting Saturday Club. In addition, our Power Boat Instructors usually run two day RYA Safety Boat courses during our Cobnor weekends.
From the age of 10 youngsters can take the RYA Junior Courses Stages 1 and 2 and then progress on to Stages 3 and 4. The more advanced RYA syllabus opens up then as well: Sailing with Spinnakers, Seamanship Skills and Performance Sailing. Under the guidance of the RYA we have structured our Junior Race Training for young sailors and we are proud to be one of the selected RYA Champion Clubs. In recent years we have also had visiting RYA coaches running extra coaching sessions for Toppers, Laser and RS Fevas sailors.
