Learn to Sail This Summer: Junior Helm Week is Back

Got a child aged 6 to 15 looking for something different to do these summer holidays? Junior Helm Week at Crawley Mariners Yacht Club (CMYC) could be just the thing.

Running from 17th–21st August, with morning or afternoon sessions available, Junior Helm Week is a week-long introduction to sailing for kids of all abilities — from complete beginners to those looking to improve. Children sail in small groups using our own fleet of Optimist and Topper dinghies, taught by RYA-qualified, DBS-checked, instructors and supported by parent volunteers.

What makes it special

CMYC is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit sailing club based in Felbridge, between Crawley and East Grinstead, and an RYA-recognised training centre. We’ve been running junior sailing for local children for decades.

There’s no commercial operator behind this: every penny goes straight back into keeping sailing accessible for kids in our community.

The week itself is all about fun rather than formal instruction. Expect small-group coaching on the water, plenty of laughs, and — for our older Topper sailors — a day of raft building that never fails to end in a splash.

Who it’s for

  • Ages 6–15, split into beginner and improver groups by age and ability
  • Optimist dinghies for younger, newer sailors
  • Topper dinghies for older or more experienced sailors
  • AM or PM sessions available across the week

Booking

Places are limited and go quickly, so early booking is genuinely worth it. Full details and booking information are on our website: Junior Helm Week or go straight to WebCollect (you will need to join as a member first).

Beyond the summer

If your child enjoys their week with us, sailing doesn’t have to stop when the holidays end. Annual junior membership starts from just £85 (£64 from June onwards) and includes a place at our monthly Junior Saturday Club, so the fun — and the learning — can carry on all year round.
