Welcome our new Commodore

Happy New Year!

2024 will provide more opportunities with new events being planned for the programme and we’ve crossed our fingers for better weather too. It is amazing to see what can be achieved at Crawley Mariners when you combine all that is available from one Club. My thanks to those that make it all happen and to you all for participating.

It is also that time for setting New Year’s Resolutions. What do you want to achieve in 2024 at CMYC? For me I plan to help you, our members, enjoy your sport safely, by making the most of what we have on offer.

You will not be surprised to learn that what I love most is sailing.

Which activity do you most enjoy?
You will not be surprised to learn that what I love most is sailing. The challenge to travel anywhere you want on the lake
even if the wind doesn't want to make it easy for you. Admittedly I enjoy kayaking too, for those times when you can
silently steer around the edge of the lake and meet the wildlife in close quarters. It is amazing what you can achieve with some help from fellow members and the Instructors. I would never have imagined I could achieve Offshore Yachtmaster or Instructor qualifications when I first joined, and believe it or not, you could end up at the Olympics!

How long have you been a Member?
This time around since 1999, just 25 years next year.

What do you sail or would like to sail?
In the early days I had an Enterprise at the lake and then, with encouragement to join a more active fleet, I moved to a standard Comet that I raced and now share with my son Harry. I would however love to experience foiling but recognise my abilities so perhaps an IMOCA instead, provided it was just for a day.

If you have a top tip for new members, what would it be?
Get involved! There are two aspects to this; while we are a Club run by its members for the members, and all voluntary help is gratefully received, the only real way to experience the Club is to get out on the water. As a member you can use the lake all year round and don't be put off if, for example there is a race on, you are still welcome. Don't hold back, set a New Year's resolution and you may be surprised at what you can achieve.

What is your favorite sports food?
Now this should surely be a banana, a well known sports food with a slow release of energy but I also like cereal bars with nuts but please note I'm unlikely to turn anything down if offered.
