Day Cruises from Itchenor

(Grid Ref SU 800015) Post code: PO20 7AW.

Arrangements for these cruises are normally published each month in the Newsletter and the monthly calendar; a reminder is also sent out just before each cruise.  Members should assemble on the Hard at Itchenor by 9.00am for a briefing at 10am and be ready to sail soon after that. Each cruise will have an intended destination and a cruise leader will be appointed who will organise and brief participants on the passages to be made.

For their own safety, boats taking part on these cruises will be expected to keep together and, as an additional safety measure, may be paired up. A picnic should be taken in the boat. A charge for the car park and harbour dues is made by the Chichester Harbour Authorities and can be paid as a daily rate or annual season ticket at the Harbour office.

2018 Chichester Cruising dates:

These cruises will have powerboat support.

Saturday 5th May Chichester-Itchenor (mid tide)  Try Cruising Day
Saturday 16th June Chichester-Itchenor (spring tide)

Saturday 12th August Chichester-Itchenor(spring tide) Fowley Island Cruise
Sunday 19th August Chichester-Itchenor (neap tide)
Saturday 1st September Chichester-Itchenor (mid tide)

Our first cruise on 5th May 2018 is called Try Cruising because we would like you sailors who have not yet been to sea to come out in an experienced helm's boat to see what cruising is like. If you like it then you may wish to try other cruises on a neap tide that have a camping option (see section on Camp and cruise for more information) and the cruise on 19th August.  A Mirror-sized dinghy is considered to be the smallest suitable for cruising on a neap tide in the harbour and helms need to have suitable experience (Level 3 and Seamanship skills).   If you wish to brush up on these skills, do book into the Level 3/Improvers course being held on 11th and 17th March 2018 at Hedgecourt Lake (details on the website).  If you are new to cruising and would like to go out in someone else's boat or have someone experienced in your boat, please let me know when you book.
For those wanting a more challenging cruise, try our spring tide cruises on 16th June and 1st September.  A Miracle-sized dinghy is considered the smallest suitable for cruising on a spring tide in the harbour.
Our cruise on 12th August is to Fowley Island. This is on a spring tide and is particularly good for more-experienced sailors.  A Miracle or similar-sized dinghy is thought to be the smallest boat suitable for this cruise.  Look on Youtube for a preview of this fascinating island.

Cruise No. 1:  Sunday 7th May 2017

The weather settled to give us a good wind and, without too much effort on our part, six boats carrying fifteen of us in all, plus two in the support boat, set off from Itchenor soon after 10:00 to head for Bosham.  It was a popular day for getting out on the water but we found enough space to practise our skills for a bit before gathering to head off towards East Head on a run.  The sand dunes were as comfortable as ever as we settled down to watch the world go by and eat our lunch, leaping up every so often to move our dinghies/support boat as the tide went out.  From East Head we set out towards Hayling Island where we ran our boats onto the sandy beach and went in search of their clubhouse facilities, which included ice creams, hot chocolate and chips.  We timed our departure to take advantage of the tide and went up towards Emsworth on a fetch before turning and beating back towards the main channel off West Wittering.  During this time the sun broke through the clouds, so with the sun on our faces, the tide with us and a decent sea breeze behind us, we made our way back to Itchenor.
