Portsmouth Harbour Saturday 3 August 2019
We meet by 9am at the public slipway next to:
Hardway Sailing Club
103 Priory Road
There will be powerboat support on this cruise.
The boats can be unloaded and the cars with road trailers can be left in the free public car park about 200m inland from the slipway. This very friendly club often invites us in for breakfast, and they also serve excellent evening meals.
The tides this year would lean towards a clockwise course. Using the high tide around lunchtime, we will head up to Fareham, then east past Porchester Castle to Porchester Sailing Club. This is another very friendly club that serves superb food. The area between the Fareham and Port Solent channels is very shallow and care should be taken! On the return to Hardway slip, we will have an outgoing tide to assist us.
Sailing News - Up Pompey!
What a fabulous day’s sailing we had in Portsmouth Harbour at the end of June 16 Mariners assembled at Hardway Sailing Club’s slipway to rig their boats and set sail once the tide had risen sufficiently. Some of us enjoyed a delicious full English breakfast in the club before we all set off at about 10.45. Dave Monk, who was cruise leader for the day, suggested that we reef our sails as it seemed to be quite breezy. Portsmouth Harbour is an interesting place for a sail with lots of navy boats moored up and the new aircraft carrier was also in port when we were there, having just returned from sea trials. (You can’t get too close to her but we saw just how enormous she is compared to all other vessels!)
Opportunities to sail in Portsmouth Harbour only come up once or at most twice each season. They are days, however, not to be missed. Parking is free, there are no launching fees, and the clubs around the harbour are without exception really pleased to see us when we sail up to their jetties and slipways.
